I take care of Maria since she was born in November 2012. Maria is the fourth child of a mother who is mentally unsound. Her two siblings are deceased shortly after birth.
Mary is found a few days after birth in the forest, where the mother gave birth. She was taken to the Nkhoma hospital, was born prematurely with a very low birthweight (1kg). On arrival, she had sunburns all over her body and she was put immediately on a neonatal sepsis protocol.. Together with the grandmother, I took care of Maria. I thaught the grandmother how to bottle feed her and the importance of hygiene. After two months in the hospital Maria went back to her village, however, she often came back because of severe diarrhea, malaria, sepsis etc.
After 6 months the grandmother asked me to adopt Maria , we visited the district office of social welfare in Lilongwe and I officially became her foster mom. On February 19 th the adoption was finalized and Mary was officially my daughter!
